20. May 2024

As usual at DJND, we have once again produced a guide for people who, for various reasons, are unable to participate in European elections and referendums like others. It is aimed at people who live abroad, people with disabilities, those who will be elsewhere in Slovenia on election day, etc. – in short, for everyone who cannot vote in the usual way. We create these election guides because we believe in the importance of political participation and actively promote it.

OMNIA polling stations, which allow voters to participate in elections even if they are outside their home constituency on election day, are organised throughout the country. To encourage voter turnout and facilitate access to polling stations, we created a simple interactive guide to OMNIA polling stations for the 2024 European Parliament elections and the referendums taking place at the same time. As voters need to register their intention to vote at an OMNIA polling station in advance, we also added instructions on how to do this to the map.

20. May 2024

The map of polling stations for early voting is one of the online tools we use to actively encourage voters to fulfil their civic duty. For the elections to the European Parliament and the referendums taking place at the same time in June 2024, we created, among other things, a simple interactive map of polling stations. The map shows all polling stations and users can click on the nearest polling station to find out more about it.

We have developed the online application izvoli.eu in cooperation with the international network VoteMatch Europe to make it easier to decide in the European Parliament elections. The application contains 30 statements that have been addressed by almost all lists running in the elections. Users can also take a stance on these statements and find out which political option they are closest to in terms of their level of agreement. Similar questionnaires were also answered by parties running on European lists in other Member States, so users can also use these statements to check where they stand in the broader European context.

Kvizle (Quizzle) is an interactive online quiz that in the weeks leading up to the November “referendum trio” confronted users with 5 new questions every day. With Quizzle, users were able to check their knowledge of the situation at the public Radiotelevizija Slovenija (RTV). The latter, which was already in poor condition, was completely demolished by intense politicization. Every day we witnessed popular shows being cancelled, journalists threatened, and unprofessional, yet politically “appropriate” personnel being hired by the just as “appropriate” management. That is why, with the help of our friends, we decided to remind the voters in a fun way about the bizarre incidents and absurd decisions that marked the year 2022 on RTV. Quizle was similar to the hit game Wordle as it encouraged players to play daily – because they were unable to immediately check whether they got their answer right and had to come back the next day in order to continue their streak and to be able to brag about it on social networks

10. November 2022

As friends of the referendum campaign FOR a professional and independent public television we created a website where we gathered relevant information, answered frequently asked questions, and encouraged people to vote. The campaign, which was organized by the organizations Association of Journalists of Slovenia (DNS), Peace Institute (Mirovni inštitut), Legal Information Center for Human Rights and Environment (PIC), and Institute for Cultural Diversity Open, was successful – over 41% of eligible voters participated in the referendum, and more than 62% of them voted in favor the law amendment.

7. November 2022

In the time leading up to parliamentary and presidential elections as well as before the “referendum trio” in 2022, we mostly focused on encouraging voter turnout and participation. Among other activities, we yet again took to adjusting the good old tool Cefizelj (named after a streetsmart albeit rather naughty literary character), an interactive guide for helping voters participate in elections. Those who are unable to vote on the announced date or cannot do so at their home polling station, still have the right to vote, and to be able to exercise it effectively, Cefizelj was there – and is always here – to help with all the answers to how, when and where.

10. October 2022

OMNIA polling stations are organized across the country in order to enable voters to take part in elections even if they find themselves outside the district of their residence on election day. We prepared a simple interactive map of OMNIA polling stations for both 2022 parliamentary and presidential elections. As voters need to announce their intention to vote at an OMNIA polling station beforehand, we also included instructions to do so and a countdown timer until the announcement deadline.

10. October 2022

We have always encouraged people to participate in elections by providing them with various digital tools that make it easier to take part and perform their civic duty. For the April 2022 parliamentary elections as well as for October and November 2022 presidential elections, we, among other things, prepared a simple interactive map that showed early polling stations. Every one of them can be found on the map and more information is revealed upon clicking on it. The map is simple to use as well as easy to share with others and it makes early voting – as well as informing others about it – a breeze.

Kvizle (Quizzle) is an interactive online quiz that in the weeks leading up to parliamentary elections of 2022 confronted users with 5 new questions every day. With Quizzle, users were able to check their knowledge of the previous mandate and thus get motivated to vote. The 2020–22 mandate was marked by so many scandals that the constant revelation of new ones sank them into oblivion before they had any kind of political consequences. That is why, with the help of our friends, we decided to remind the voters in a fun way about the many abuses and wrongdoings of the outgoing government and help them make a responsible electoral decision. Quizle was similar to the hit game Wordle as it encouraged players to play daily – because they were unable to immediately check whether they got their answer right and had to come back the next day in order to continue their streak and to be able to brag about it on social networks.

17. March 2022

We wanted to fight the pre-electoral ideological cancer that is: "They are all the same anyway." Instead of focusing on empty political soundbites we wanted to focus the conversation during the election campaign on content. To achieve these goals we created Vote-o-matic (Volitvomat) as part of the initiative Vox populi (Glas ljudstva). You can use it to check how well your political views align with the views of the parties running for (re)election. Answer some questions and Vote-o-matic will show you which parties you align with, which you disagree with and what the details of those disagreements are.

We are one of many civil society and non-governmental organizations that are behind the Voice of the People initiative. The initiative aims to articulate 100 public demands for the political parties that intend to run in the upcoming parliamentary elections to take a stance on. The voice of the people comes as a response to the low trust that people have in politics, to its emptiness in terms of content and the vulgar assertion of particular rather than public interests by many politicians. Because we deserve better.

6. July 2021

As part of the campaign AGAINST the harmful legislative changes brought on by the new Water Act, we prepared an updated map of OMNIA polling stations for all those who wanted to vote outside their place of residence on the day of the referendum. The guide is presented in the form of an interactive map that makes it easy to locate the nearest OMNIA polling station and forward one’s intention to vote elsewhere to the National Electoral Commission. Because just about every drop in the ocean counts towards a winning goal!

16. June 2021

We dedicated all available resources to campaigning against the new Water Act, which introduced environmentally unacceptable provision, and was challenged by the civil society at a referendum. Since the referendum was called in the middle of summer when many people are away for holidays, we prepared an interactive guide based on our open source Cefizelj tool. The simple web application listed all the ways people could vote if they were away on the day of the referendum or the polling station was not accessible to them.

18. December 2020

The end of 2020 saw the first timid attempts to overthrow the third government of Janez Janša. To help people understand the possibilities we published a website, dedicated to simple political mathematics. As the race for 46 MP votes began, with it came the bargaining and hypothesizing both inside and outside of parliament – and we provided some bittersweet educational entertainment for the interested public.

project-participativni.png

1. November 2018

Ahead of the 2018 local elections, we encouraged mayoral candidates to commit to implementing participatory budgeting in their municipalities. We received 275 pledges, of which 57 candidates who promised to implement participatory budgeting won the elections. At the same time, we also worked to raise public understanding of the advantages of participatory budgeting, which benefits citizens, increases trust in local democratic processes, and ultimately improves communities.
