DISCO is a new regional event that fosters critical thought, champions digital rights, and fuels social activism. The first DISCO conference, subtitled Civil Society Reimagining Technological Progress, will focus on the transformative power of active and engaged civil society. From inspiring legal battles and activist campaigns to engineering breakthroughs, we will explore alternative ways to think about the idea of technological progress. Guided by a constellation of captivating voices, we intend to reshape the discourse and redefine the narrative, propelling our region to the vanguard of the global digital sovereignty movement.

Between 10–12 May, 2023, we hosted a training on organising and leading citizens assemblies in Kranjska Gora. The training was organised in collaboration with lecturers from the Polish organization "Center for Blue Democracy." Citizens assemblies are becoming increasingly widespread and recognized internationally as a way to involve the public in local government activities. Such forums need to be well-designed, and conducted with trust, ease, and joy. Participants at the workshop learned about the process of organizing citizen forums according to the principles of "design thinking."

On a cold December evening, social networks were flooded with outraged posts reacting to a memo from Hofer banning homeless people from selling their newspaper in front of its outlets. In doing so, they communicated to an already vulnerable social group that they are unwanted and should become invisible – just to provide their customers a holiday shopping experience without any bad conscience. We strongly oppose this kind of segregation, so called on the public to boycott Hofer and help the homeless.

At the Active Citizenship and Political Participation conference, organized by Pro Et Contra, institute For Culture in Dialogue, Eva and Filip participated in the I participate, therefore I am panel. In a short talk, Eva introduced Today is a New Day. She spoke about the origins of the Proposals project in the context of media allegations that the 2012-13 protests had no political content. The Predlogi platform clearly demonstrated that people are not only "against" but are also able to articulate a "for". Since these beginnings, the institute has since focused on transparency and control.

At the Active Citizenship and Political Participation conference, organized by Pro Et Contra, institute For Culture in Dialogue, Eva and Filip participated in the I participate, therefore I am panel. In a fifteen-minute talk, Filip spoke about online political participation. He offered insights into how we talk and think about online participation, went over the context and specifics of the Internet compared to other media, and concluded his contribution with some lessons that we at Today is a new day learned through our own work.

Žiga was invited to speak at TedX FDV where he held a presentation titled On the power of Internet communities. He used various examples (from counting corks to community translation) to demonsrate the potential of the community. He called for organizing and solidarity, and above all for understanding of the specific cultural context that we live in. The latter calls for new forms of democracy, more direct ways of political participation and decision-making, and the empowerment and activation of engaged Internet residents. The video is a snapshot of the entire short lecture at the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Existing today as a Youtube playlist, Homygod (orig. Homojbog) emerged as a companion project in the Pride Parade week. It was an intervention against counterproductive and patronising attitude toward sexual and gender minorities. Many media personalities participated in the campaign. The purpose of the project was to use vulgar language and direct, street self-declarations of recognizable people to demonstrate solidarity with all those who are offended by such language on a daily basis and to show that we are against maintaining any distinction between "us" and "them."

Student Organising Day was an event at ZRC SAZU that was inspired by the original Today is a new day platform Problemi (Problems). Ales Črnič, Slavko Gaber, Klemen Miklavič and Jože Vogrinc contributed to reflections on the legal status of student organisations in Slovenia, their financing, functioning and politicization, as well as the divide between common and particular interests that they follow. The meeting was broadcast by Radio Student, and the full hall of students dispelled the myth about their disinterest and passivization. We at the institute were encouraged to relate a significant proportion of our future activities to student issues.

Water Day was an event at ZRC SAZU that was inspired by the original Today is a new day platform Problemi (Problems). Nikolai Jeffs (FHŠ), who presented the social aspects of water privatization in the UK, spoke about the issue of privatization of water resources and the search for more democratic ways of managing the commons; Maja Simoneti (Institute for Spatial Policies) explained the pitfalls of privatization; Urša Šebenik (Institute for Sustainable Development) spoke about the actual situation in Slovenia, and Žiga Vodovnik (FDV) informed us about the privatization in Latin America.

Today is a crazy day! We localized the world's viral obsession with Harlem shake, added a hint of domestic political satire, innovative use of university spaces and an abundance of joie de vivre. This is a video edit of an event that we happened to witness on an otherwise quiet evening at the premises of a University of Ljubljana faculty. Although the event lasted only 30 seconds, it effectively demonstrated two possible visions of Slovenian future: one is of toxic yellow colour and the other is rainbow. We are all for song and dance!
